A good work environment has managers that act like they're in partnership with you: they only succeed when you're successful.

A bad one is a top down, command and control organization.

There's a lot of area in between the two extremes.

It takes a lot of practice and studying to get all the way to a partnership model. The benefits, though, can be huge. It's amazing how many managers don't bother to learn it.
