I think you're right that quite a few workplaces (maybe even most) have bad incentive structures and/or bad bosses. I've definitely been there. At the same time, I think it's in the employer's best interest to try to have employees at least somewhat enjoy what they're doing.

I predict that our growing labor shortage is going to force employees to have to do better. Though it's probably going to take a while for that to happen...
