Many of the older generation I've worked with find value in having a place in a company and bringing in a good paycheck. It's probably from that lingering baby boomer mentality where there were more people than jobs, so having security matters.
We are more and more having the opposite problem with not enough workers. So that security isn't as much an issue.
I got into a disagreement with an old boss when he couldn't understand why I would want to trade salary for more time off. More money doesn't matter as long as I had enough, and I'll never be able to buy more time with my kids later in life. But for him, that just didn't compute.
