There's two weird extremes to this. One is what you're pointing out, the "you have to love work" side of things. The other is the "suck it up, work is called work for a reason" side.

I love Tom Rath's writing, who points out people are more satisfied with their jobs if they can see how they're helping people (example: cooks who can see their customers do better than those locked away in a kitchen). This seems like a sensible middle ground that we should be pushing for: you may not love what you do, but you can love how you are helping other people. But it takes work to get there.
